DARRYL BARR is Bulletproof Forensic Consulting Ltd.

Darryl is a senior Forensic Scientist - Firearm and Toolmark Examiner who is independently certified by the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE). Darryl has over 32 years of experience working across Canada on crime scene processing, forensic laboratory analysis, and providing expert testimony in court. Having previously worked as a scientist for law enforcement and advising Crown prosecutors, Darryl also has a solid understanding of the issues and complexities involved in the collection, examination and interpretation of shooting and firearms related evidence.

Between 1992-2011, Darryl worked for the RCMP National Forensic Services in both Winnipeg and Halifax, conducting casework, shooting reconstruction and testifying across the country, where he introduced 3D computer modelling of shooting scenes to many court jurisdictions. He has assisted judges and juries in superior, provincial, military courts martial and public inquiries across the country by providing expert testimony on shooting reconstruction in complex shooting trials, including contentious officer involved shootings.

In 2011, Darryl created and began managing the first forensic lab to open in Canada in over 65 years, for the Calgary Police Service. This was the first firearm lab in Canada to combine innovative new processes with the latest technologies to provide quick intelligence in firearm and shooting investigations. In addition, he assisted in developing and implementing innovative new policies and procedures on how a major municipal police service handles crime guns and shooting evidence, all of which have proven highly effective in the fight against gun crime. Since then, Darryl has assisted in the planning and development of other firearm examination units and labs for police and government agencies across Canada.

Darryl has been an invited guest and keynote speaker both nationally and internationally on the topics of shooting reconstruction, and best practices for the scientific and technical investigation of shootings and gun crime. In addition to having been an active member of many national and provincial committees and working groups dedicated to solving issues in the forensic analysis of firearms and shootings, Darryl is also a member of the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE), the Association for Crime Scene Reconstruction (ACSR) and the Canadian Identification Society (CIS).

In 2024, after having achieved a sustained zero-backlog, Darryl left the Firearm Lab in Calgary and took on the new challenge of full-time consulting. His specialties are shooting incident reconstruction and reviews, 3D computer modelling of shooting scenes, and firearm laboratory development and improvement.
