ABOUT
Meticulous - Critical - Unbiased
DARRYL BARR is a senior Forensic Scientist - Firearm and Toolmark Examiner, with extensive experience working across Canada on crime scene processing, forensic laboratory practices and expert testimony. This experience has provided Darryl with the ability to identify and understand the issues involved with the collection, examination and interpretation of shooting and firearms evidence for the benefit of your particular case.
Darryl has over 30 years of experience working as a civilian in this specialized discipline of forensic science and has been a member of many national and international associations, committees and working groups involved in improving and creating best practices for the technical and scientific investigation of shootings and gun crime. He has assisted judges and juries in superior, provincial, military courts martial and public inquiries across the country by providing expert testimony on shooting reconstruction in complex shooting trials, including contentious officer involved shootings. Darryl also provides assistance to Legal Counsel through the evaluation of expert testimony and qualifications and the evaluation and interpretation of disclosure materials.
Darryl focuses his professional development on the sub-specialty of shooting incident reconstruction. He developed methodology for integrating the results of shooting reconstruction with 3D computer aided design and animation software to create 3D computer models of shooting scenes in an effort to aid courts in understanding the dynamics of complex shooting incidents.
After a fulfilling career with the National Forensic Laboratory Services (RCMP), Darryl moved on to create and manage the first forensic firearms laboratory to open in Canada in over 60 years, for a large metropolitan police service. Here, the latest technologies were combined with innovative internal and external processes to provide meaningful intelligence early on in an investigation. In addition to creating this firearms laboratory, he assisted in developing and implementing new policies and protocols on how a large municipal police service deals with crime guns and shooting evidence, all of which have proven highly effective in the fight against gun crime. After having achieved a sustained zero-backlog for this laboratory, Darryl has since taken on the new challenge of consulting full-time.
